Could the Bondi Beach Massacre Have Been Prevented?
Communities need to help assure the security of holy places
The horrible events on Bondi Beach in Sydney Australia on December 14th, where 12 were killed and 29 wounded, by at least two gunmen, illustrates the level of threat to the Jewish community in Australia and globally.
The New South Wales police revealed the shooters are a father and son combo, the father aged 50 and the son aged 24. The father was killed by police action. The son is critically wounded and in hospital. The six weapons seized were all licensed to the father.
A friend of ours, Arsem Ostrovsky, a hero in the fight against antisemitism, was seriously wounded on the beach where the local Chabad community was hosting the event celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah (the Festival of Lights).
Australia has been plagued by rising antisemitism fueled, in part, by the hostile attitude of the Australian government to Israel and to antisemitism, who turned a blind eye to the security concerns of the Jewish community in the country and to the frequent assaults and threats aimed at them. Australia’s Prime Minister, of course, said the right things about the attack, but failed to admit to his own role in causing the tragedy.
The event that took place on Bondi beach was organized and sponsored by Chabad. Chabad-Lubavitch, is a major movement within Orthodox Hasidic Judaism known for its extensive global outreach efforts to all Jews, regardless of their current level of observance. In Jewish terms, Chabad is one of the least judgmental religious groups in the Jewish religious world.
The Chabad rabbi, Eli Schlanger, was killed in the shooting.
Many Chabad centers have been attacked in recent years. Perhaps the worst, before Bondi, was the assault on the synagogue in Mumbai, India, called Nariman House. Eight people were killed including Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka.
Other attacks or planned assaults on Chabad facilities include
2025 Chabad Daycare Center, Beersheba, Israel: A Chabad-operated daycare center sustained significant damage from an Iranian cluster bomb strike in June 2025.
2025 Manchester, UK Synagogue: An attack on a Manchester synagogue in October 2025 resulted in two deaths and three injuries.
2024 Foiled Athens, Greece Plot: A plot to attack the Chabad house in Athens, potentially linked to Iran, was foiled by authorities in October 2024.
2024 US Incidents: In September 2025, three consecutive antisemitic incidents targeting Chabad centers were reported in the United States. In July 2024, a Chabad Jewish Center in Oakland, CA was vandalized twice within two weeks.
2019 Poway, California Shooting: A shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue in April 2019 killed one woman and injured three others.
2019 Massachusetts Arson: An alleged arsonist attacked two different Chabad centers in Massachusetts.
There are around 4,000 Chabad-operated places of worship and study globally.
Previous attacks and threats suggest that at least some of the terrorism is directly linked to Iran.
In my forthcoming book on Security Planning for Holy Places, an updated version of my 2019 Security for Holy Places, I go into depth on the importance of security planning and preparation for places of worship. While the details of the Bondi beach attack are still unclear, and the Sydney police and other law enforcement organizations are just beginning their investigation, it is likely security at Bondi beach was minimal, if there was any at all.
The video evidence so far does not show any intervention by police while the shooting was taking place. We do know that once law enforcement arrived on the scene at least two officers were seriously wounded. The police killed one of the assailants, and wounded the other (of the two so far identified).
Because this was a public event with at least 1,000 in attendance, it is concerning that the authorities did not see fit to provide adequate security to protect the community.
Typically Chabad centers are shoestring operations. Many of their sites are private homes that have been re-tasked as places of worship. But one wonders whether Chabad requested a police presence at the beach Hanukkah celebration, given the scale of the events and its public nature?

Most experts on the rising threat of antisemitism are worried about terrorist attacks. Many radical Islamists, and others who support radical anti-Israel and anti-Jewish ideology, talk openly about killing Jews and organize protests in front of synagogues, intimidating worshippers.
There are many who are suggesting ways to lower the threshold of fear and intimidation. But that does not always work and won’t prevent violence in future. Jewish institutions need to step up their security efforts and work with law enforcement, wherever possible, to deter terrorist criminals.
The same advice applies equally to Christian, Moslem and other religions where there have been attacks on their holy sites and on related institutions such as schools and camps or, in Europe, Christmas markets. Attacks on church goers, even ministers and priests, are reprehensible, but potentially preventable.
Good security deters terrorism. Bad security (meaning weak or nonexistent) encourages violence. Good security means adequate police or well-trained security guards, who are armed and protected by security vests and helmets.
Cities and towns around the world need to step up and do more than offer condolences to the victims.

As distasteful and evil as this attack was and will remain, how ironic that the hero whose selfless efforts prevented many more deaths was a man whose very ethnicity is hated by Israeli’s, Zionists, consider the equally vile, evil, destructive, dehumanising vitriol and slander repeatedly stated by Israel’s as they prosecute the response to the oppressed rising up legally to their oppressors during the event now known internationally as 10/7 or Oct 7.
Consider the response by the oppressors against those oppressed since 10/7 - Oct 7, the wanton, gleeful, celebrated killings of so many innocent civilians as most wickedly the Israeli Authorities cite the fact that even kids grow up to be terrorists, that all adults in Gaza are terrorists given their support of terrorists, whilst we know that this most evil, of states, the construct Israel itself and as admitted its most vile leader, Benjamin Mileikowski aka Netanyahu, who like virtually every politician changed his Eastern European Ashkenazi Zionist name to reflect and sound more akin to one who has long established roots to the region, done so in a misguided attempt to ensure that as part of the entire fabrication and lie spun to the rest of the world that those who have emigrated to Palestine, have merely returned to a land to which they have a long history.
The reality couldn’t be more different, most early arrivals post WW2 who given the horrors experienced perpetrated against them by the NAZIS, a lot of which it has been proven the Theodor Herzl Zionists themselves supported, aided and abetted against Eastern European Jews in particular before callously post the Balfour declaration, their fighting the British under whom it was that Palestine was administered, doing so in a long and protracted asymmetric war of terrorism, with acts that were considered the most heinous, atrocities were committed against members of the British military and administrative class who were overseeing life in Palestine from the 1890’s through 1947/8 when the U.N agreed to allowing Part of Palestine to become a place settled by European Ashkenazi Zionists.

The ironic takeaway, is that these evil Zionists in forbidding Iranian and other ethnic Jews from returning together the many others forbidden or verboten all being treated as persona non grata because of their being perceived as a fiscal drag and burden upon those earlier arrivals and their resources, something it seems is anathema to Zionists, helping others, especially anyone poorer, no problems as we know helping those with money to make or acquire more, especially if it’s a win/win, which on the face of it is about as anti anything especially humanity, you’ll find anywhere.
However by refusing entry, the founders and those since have done for those Jews so refused the biggest favour, seems the Jews in Iran today still enjoy a life style beyond compare to those Zionist captives who ached to live in Palestine… at least they live peaceably, are not used as human shields, ordered to serve in the military, a military awash in inequity, in tawdry habits, rape, sodomy, torture, wanton killing of innocents, at least those outside of Zionist Israel have no fears of their souls being compromised.

We also know that the original founders and members of the groups undertaking the terrorist acts against the indigenous Palestinian populace and Administrators, the British, focussed on recruiting into their Army men able to wield a weapon, to fight, before cynically closing down the ability of Jews to emigrate to Israel being many who having suffered in the camps and survived but whose health had deteriorated, seeking what they thought was the golden ticket to a Jewish state, were declined entry and access, why so? It’s long past the time Zionism acts likewise, either that or become forever the pariah so deserved, shunned, hated by society, mind you they are most of the way there already, perhaps that’s the true objective, with the result more attacks such as in Bondi and so many more like it will continue, everywhere, then again, maybe that is the real objective, attacks continue, with the result the platform needed to cry victim, continues unabated, helps to keep the grift, the money pouring in, a few lives taken here and there … collateral, we can continue to cry victim, garner support, sympathy, our friendly politicians will ensure that, eventually greater Israel will manifest Zionists will achieve their goal of taking land from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Türkiye just as confirmed Mileikowski in the U.N recall his maps proudly held aloft, just happens most of the areas demarcated are oil,and resource rich, funny that, now that is evil incarnate, allowing and embracing events such as Bondi to aide and abet such an agenda, especially when there is a solution staring you in the face, the actions of this man in Bondi disarming one of the shooters proves we can live together they ought embrace it while the goodwill for such exists… just saying
