Every new technology carries its fair share of baggage and Pandora's Box is opening up wide insofar as the EV is concerned. We are just beginning to see the multitude of issues that we will have to confront to expand the adaption of EVs to scale.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers put together a nice anthology of articles on EVs from their Spectrum magazine that addresses some of the challenges we will have to confront. Just scan the contents for an idea of what lies ahead:

On the other hand, some folks are confident that ICE-powered vehicles will be around for a long time:

Tragedies on land too, are becoming a problem for firefighters. I currently write grants for municipalities and write quite a few firefighter grants. In talking with them, EV battery fires are becoming a big concern amongst firefighters across the US. They burn very, very hot and emit a lot of toxicity. They are very difficult to extinguish. "Put the wet stuff on the red stuff", as firefighters say, is not a working strategy for this type of battery fire. It will be interesting to see if someone comes up with a new technology which helps to alleviate this problem, whether with the batteries themselves or the means to fight subsequent fires.
