It is not just that the industry is not ready. The entire economy is aimed at servicing debt, hence any real production will play second fiddle to that and will by necessity be much more expensive than needed.

Every step in the production process is financed through debt. And that debt must be serviced. This must of course be included in the price of the product. I am not sure, but I would not be surprised that more than 50% of the final production price is in fact debt servicing payments.

Compare that to an economy where (weapons) production capacity is in the hands of the state, fully owned. Paid years ago by taxes then levied.

It is not possible to compete with such an economy when it comes to producing weapons. And hence it becomes impossible to win an attrition war with such an adversary.

Well, the bottom line here IMO is already "getting old." The West led by an increasingly crazed "Uncle Sam" followed by vapid Euro (and even Asian) vassals is having to learn that they're not only out-smarted, but "out-gunned." The uber private sector capitalist weapons providers in the West only care about profit, not national priorities and the last 3 decades of igniting and fighting small bore wars on "terrorism" put emphasis on "special forces" downplaying the need for expanding industrial base production of classic weapons systems including missile production. The eruption of the Ukraine proxy war on Russia, and then the absurd genocidal war by Israel on the Palestinians has resulted in extraordinary demand by both U.S. proxies (and Euro vassals) for missile defense systems, despite the fact that they are far from 100% accurate . . . BUT has also energized the development and implementation of more sophisticated (hypersonic) missile systems by both Russia and China to counter the aggressive West. As Stephen outlines above, the U.S. does not have the industrial capacity -- much less popular support -- or the necessary component inputs to forestall a probable outcome of the struggle between the failing West and its targeted enemies: Russian victory in Ukraine and Chinese continuing economic AND military ascendancy in East Asia and the world.
